Director of Research and Prospect Strategy - Advancement and External Affairs

 
Job Summary:
The Director of Research & Prospect Strategy serves as a key member of the Advancement & External Affairs team in support of the fundraising goals of the College.  She/he  identifies researches and presents  significant information on individuals, companies and foundations for development  purposes;  assigns  prospects  to  gift  officers  in  consultation  with  the  Campaign Director and the Senior Vice President for Advancement & External Affairs (SVP); participates on a team that formulates cultivation and solicitation strategies in conjunction with the gift officers; develops and implements policies and procedures relative to prospect research; plans and authorizes expenditures for resources used in prospect research within the approved budget. A major focus for this position will be prospecting for Iona’s largest-ever Comprehensive Campaign: Iona Forever.
 
Qualifications:
  • Bachelor’s degree or greater
  • Strong management, supervisory, organizational, and project management skills
  • Extensive knowledge of online research databases such as Lexis/Nexis
  • Extensive knowledge of development databases such as Blackbaud Raiser’s Edge software
  • Excellent presentation, communication, and writing skills
At least 5 years of progressively responsible experience in prospect research and fundraising. A deep understanding of philanthropy, higher education and fundraising programs. Experience using online databases for prospect information and the creation of relationship webs. Work experience in a comprehensive campaign setting and knowledge of campaign procedures are a plus.
 
Skills:
Must possess advanced skills in prospect research including an understanding of major gifts and moves management fundraising concepts, gift and planned gift vehicles (wills, trusts, etc.) and business, government and legal documents  (IRS Form 990, SEC filings, property assessments etc.).
 
Expert command of internet research and investigatory techniques. Strong analytical skills and the ability to synthesize a high volume of information for end users. Excellent networking, interpersonal and oral and written communication skills.

Duties and Responsibilities:
The Director of Research & Prospect Strategy is responsible for all aspects of development research and prospect management. She/he will manage the identification/discovery, research and evaluation of major gift prospects and prospect management.  The Director will participate and lead formulating collaborative strategies and initiatives for the solicitation of major donors.
 
Research
  • Prepare research for executive leadership, campaign cabinet volunteers, and development staff for the purposes of donor cultivation and solicitation.
  • Responsible for the content, caliber, presentation and availability of all individual, foundation, and corporate research.
  • Establish policies and oversee research procedures utilizing standard reference sources and specific Iona resources including databases and files, and ensure that the research function remains current on all emerging tools and methods.
  • Ensure that research staff adheres to industry ethical standards and maintains confidentiality.
  • Establish policies and procedures for donor file maintenance, periodical file collections, etc.
Prospect Management
  • Create a robust prospect tracking program, including establishing a pipeline of individual giving prospects and gift officer portfolios
  • Lead regular prospect tracking meetings for gift officers.
  • Create an evaluation system to measure and analyze gift officer activity including cultivation activities and other contacts.
The research function is expected to play a large and important role in identifying donors with the greatest capacity to give and in effectively focusing the efforts of the major gifts staff in realizing the goals of the Iona Forever comprehensive campaign. The main responsibilities of the position are:
  • Maintain an overall knowledge of Iona College’s top prospects to assist fundraisers in developing appropriate cultivation, solicitation, and stewardship strategies; reference and represent that information at meetings and in discussions, as needed.
  • Develop and oversee budgets and policies and procedures for the research area.
  • Evaluate research tools and emerging technology and coordinate vendor relationships
  • Perform other duties as assigned.
The Director of Research & Prospect Strategy will be called upon to regularly brief the College’s senior staff and the Campaign Cabinet leadership on donor opportunities. Particular challenges will include maintaining the research focus on principal and major gift opportunities, prioritizing efforts to ensure the greatest assistance to fundraisers and researching and analyzing a large alumni and parent prospect pool in the most effective manner possible.
 
The Director of Research & Prospect Strategy is a critical part of the Advancement & External Affairs team and reports to its Iona Forever Campaign Director.
