Residence Hall Director for Operations

Job Summary:
This is a full-time, live-in, 12–month position with evening and weekend responsibilities that reports to the Assistant Director of Residential Life.

  • A Bachelor’s degree is required, a Master's degree, in Higher Education, Business Administration or related field and previous professional experience in residential life is strongly preferred
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills, strong customer service, organizational and problem solving abilities
  • Proven ability to work effectively with students, faculty and staff and promote a positive residential culture and community
  • Experience working with a diverse student population and well versed in all aspects of residential living in a college or university, student development theory and emergency response
Duties and Responsibilities:
  • Assist with the day-to-day management and supervision of a residential program of approximately 1,300 students
  • Train, supervise and evaluate student staff
  • Foster academic, social, cultural, spiritual, occupational, and personal growth in the residence halls consistent with the mission of the College
  • Develop a comfortable, safe, supportive, and respectful community living environment
  • Oversee, design, and implement programs and events to enhance a sense of community and provide outreach to students
  • Serve as a hearing officer to maintain community standards, address behavioral concerns and code of conduct violations
  • Ensure that living and common areas are safe, clean and functional
  • Assist with the coordination of check-ins, check-outs, fire, health, and safety inspections, roster verification, room changes, room condition reports, and damage billing and occupancy management
  • Lead and assist designated committees, initiatives or processes such as: Resident Assistant Selection, Trainings, In-Services, Orientation and Housing Selection
  • Participate and assist in major College, Residential Life, and other events as assigned
  • Serve in the professional staff duty rotation and respond to crises as they arise. The Residence Hall Director may be required to work in the event of an emergency or severe weather conditions, whether or not the College is closed
  • Plan and participate in all professional and para-professional trainings and staff development and meetings.
  • Serve as a positive role model that must be familiar with, enforce, and support all Iona College and Residential Life policies
  • Accept additional responsibilities as needed
Specific Duties – Residence Hall Director for Operations:
  • Responsible for the day-to-day management of the guest policy and residence hall front desks and mailrooms. 
  • Recruit, hire, train, supervise, evaluate, and manage the payroll budget for approximately 100 student employees
  • Maintain and develop the Residential Life website and promotional material
  • Assist with the overall management and assessment of the student code of conduct process and database (PAVE)
  • Serve as a resource for students and campus partners regarding the conduct process, track, update, and following up on all incidents, correspondence, complete and overdue sanctions
  • Develop and implement programs that promote students’ rights, responsibilities, and community standards
  • Plan and organize all residence hall openings and closings, including the beginning and end of each semester and all vacation periods.
  • Assist students and staff with the room change process
  • Coordinate the summer housing program
  • Research, coordinate, and implement periodic assessment of the residential population
