Iona College Announces New Communication Sciences and Disorders Graduate Program Launching Fall 2014

1/16/2014
New Rochelle, NY (January 16, 2014) Beginning in fall 2014, Iona College will offer a new master’s of art degree in Communication Sciences and Disorders (CSD). The program is currently a candidate for accreditation by the Council on Academic Accreditation in Audiology and Speech Language Pathology.  This “pre-accreditation” status will allow Iona to admit its first cohort of CSD graduate students for the 2014-2015 academic year.

"Iona has been offering an extremely strong, clinically focused speech communication studies program to undergraduate students for decades,” said Dorothy Leone, Ph.D., CCC-SLP; assistant professor and program director.  “We are truly excited about being able to bring this experience to our new graduate program, providing that same kind of education and skills to our first cohort of graduate students this fall."

This CSD program is a 58-credit, student-centered experience offering significant clinical opportunities, as well as competitive externships.  Students will have opportunities to provide speech and language therapy to both adults and children with a full array of speech and language disorders in a variety of settings.

The two-year, full time program includes coursework in the foundational sciences of speech-language pathology that is assimilated into clinical coursework, all of which will prepare students to evaluate and treat speech, language and swallowing disorders, as well as cognitive and social aspects of communication.

The program will be taught in a state-of-the-art campus clinic offering a myriad of clinical opportunities all in a small-class-size setting. Students will benefit from one-on-one supervision by licensed therapists as they gain professional practicum experience. Graduate research opportunities with faculty members will also be offered to compliment the advanced degree experience.
