9/16/2013

New Rochelle, NY (September 16, 2013) Twelve Iona Chemistry/Biochemistry majors, along with their mentor, Sunghee Lee, Ph.D., chair of the Chemistry department,  proudly presented their research at the 246th American Chemical Society (ACS) National Meeting on Sept 8-10, held in Indianapolis, IN. Over 10,000 chemists from throughout the world attended this national meeting to share their cutting-edge research results

As a capstone to their summer of laboratory research, these twelve students attended scientific seminars presented by acclaimed chemical scientists and entertaining science-related events by celebrities including Alan Alda. The students also presented three posters summarizing their research results, on the following topics:

"Development of Droplet Interface Bilayer for Water Permeability Studies";

"Inorganic Crystallization at a Nanomembrane"; and

 "Anion Sensitivity of Monoglycerides at the Liquid-Liquid Interface".

The student attendees were Jaclyn Robustelli ('14, Biochemistry), Peter Vitale ('14, Biochemistry), Michelle Muzzio ('15, Chemistry), Omoakhe Tisor ('15, Biochemistry), Rosario Giacomini ('15, Biochemistry), Safiat Ayinde ('15 Biochemistry), Peter Milianta ('16, Biochemistry), Ricardo Oliveira ('16, Chemistry), Jacqueline Martinez ('16, Chemistry), Melissa Morales ('16, Chemistry), Geoffrey Cawley ('16, Chemistry) and Sean Campbell ('16, Computer Science).

Their trip was made possible through the generous support from the Patrick Martin Foundation, Iona College, and National Science Foundation research grant awarded to Dr. Lee.
