Dr. J. Manuel Gómez holds a Ph.D. in Spanish from Ohio State University. His fields of concentration are: Indigenous, Colonial, Latin American Cultures and Literatures with an expertise in Cultural Studies and Theory. He possesses a MA in French Literature, as well as a B.A. in English Language, and a B.A. in French Language from Universidad de Costa Rica, San José, Costa Rica.
Professor Gómez previously worked for Universidad de Costa Rica, Catholic University, Arizona State University, University of Pennsylvania. He teaches in both the graduate and undergraduate programs at Iona College since 2007.
Transatlantic Studies: Latin American literatures and cultures, colonial Spanish, British and French travel writing in Central American and the Caribbean areas, autobiographical testimonial literature, Cultural Studies, and Theory.
Topics of interest: Subjectivity, memory, identity, culture, testimonial literature and its representation in discourse, space and borders, travel writing in Central American area and the Caribbean during colonial rule: Narratives of pirates and privateers.
