Biography

Dr. Burns has been a member of the Iona graduate faculty for over four decades, while also working as a psychologist and family therapist in private practice and for a wide range of clinical settings.  Most notably, Dr. Burns participated in critical incident debriefing with members of the New York City and Boston Police Departments, related to the incidents of the 9/11 World Trace Center and Boston Marathon Bombings.  Dr. Burns currently serves as a Site Visitor for COAMFTE, the national accreditor of programs in Marriage and Family Therapy.

Research/Interests

Structural/systems approaches in therapy; Mindfulness and its application to therapy; Dying and death: the impact on families and how families deal with these events; Critical Incident Stress Management; and Self of the therapist issues as they pertain to the success of therapy and the health and well-being of therapists.
