IONA

Gender issues:  How women move the world.

What is the role of women in shaping and defining our world? What can be done to improve gender equality, both locally and globally? At Iona, our faculty will lead you in an exploration of historic and contemporary gender issues in the world and prepare you for a leadership role in pursuit of social justice for all people.

Developing new perspectives

Women’s Studies at Iona is an interdisciplinary minor housed in the Sociology Department. The program focuses on the contributions of women in society and exposes students, both female and male, to the study of sex and gender from cross-disciplinary perspectives. You’ll explore issues raised by contemporary feminists and study the effects of gender roles on political, economic and social institutions. You’ll graduate with an understanding of changing roles and expectations in American society and you’ll bring new perspectives into the workplace.

Community dialogue

The Women’s Studies program promotes campus-wide awareness of feminist thought and gender equality issues. Our students participate in dynamic conferences and events that affect social justice for women. We are proud to sponsor the Iona Women’s Studies Student Scholars Conference, the annual Iona Woman of Achievement Award Celebration, and to organize the events and activities of Women’s History Month.
