Gaining the Confidence to Move the World

From her vantage point 3,000 miles away in LA, Iona College was the only choice for Gabrielle Simpson. “I knew I wanted to stay in the entertainment sector so I looked at schools in New York. Iona stood out – I absolutely fell in love.”  Gabrielle was attracted to Iona’s small class sizes, accredited communication programs, and especially the proximity to the city. “I was in Manhattan within a half an hour, I had the world at my fingertips.”

As an undergraduate, Gabrielle was quickly engaged in campus activities and organizations, including leadership in the Student Government Association and executive positions with ICTV. “It’s extremely easy to get involved at Iona – that’s one of the perks of going to a smaller college or university.”

As a Mass Communication major, Gabrielle gained the kind of real-world experience that gave her a decided edge in the workplace. “From your very first class, you’re in the control room, you’re in the booth – everything is very hands on.” An internship with ABC on the set of Live with Regis and Kelly paved the way for her first professional job.

Gabrielle went on to pursue a master’s degree in public relations at Iona and jobs with CBS and now NBC. “As an undergrad, I attended Meet a Career Mentor Day and connected with an Iona alumnus who was a senior vice president at a major television network. He helped me get my foot in the door.”

Today, Gabrielle manages diversity and inclusion communications at NBCUniversal and she credits Iona for helping her get there. “Through my communication studies and my involvement in clubs and activities, which gave me a lot of leadership experience, Iona definitely prepared me.”
