Good communicators can move the world

The moment she stepped on campus, Caitlyn O’Toole knew Iona was for her. It was Scholar’s Day, a time devoted to welcoming potential honors students to campus. “I felt a spring in my step. As the day continued, Iona continued to look better and better.” And that was just the beginning.

As a freshman in the Honors Program, Caitlyn quickly took advantage of all that Iona has to offer. She liked the small classes, the dynamic faculty and the supportive, engaged community. With the encouragement of her professors, she settled on a double major in English and Political Science and began developing the communication skills that would make her a leader on campus.

A staffer for The Ionian, Iona’s student-run newspaper, Caitlyn is also a member of the Iona Players, Iona Singers, Inter-Residence Council, Democracy Matters, SADD and Golden Key International Honour Society. She volunteers with Campus Ministries, is an RA, and serves on the Student Government Association, for whom she is creating a social media presence. “We have a twitter handle, @IonaCollegeSGA, that proved especially useful during Hurricane Sandy.”

Caitlyn studied abroad in Paris, has been involved with Soliya Connect and the UN/NGO student forums, and has found many other ways to serve and lead. “I think being involved is at the heart of everything and Iona has offered me so many opportunities.” In spring 2013, Caitlyn was awarded the prestigious Lipper Internship at the Museum of Jewish Heritage–A Living Memorial to the Holocaust.

“Both my Iona experience and my internship have prepared me for success in the rest of my life. They have centered on how to communicate effectively with people and how to work together to achieve a common goal.”
