Moving the world, from the set of SNL
John Zerbo had always been the entertainer in his family so he figured, why not make a living out of it? In his freshman year as a Mass Communication major with a TV/Video concentration, he got his chance.
“I found an opening for a job as a stagehand at Saturday Night Live and I applied. When I handed them my resume, it basically said “Iona College”…and they hired me. After my first day working at a television show, I knew this was where I wanted to be the rest of my life.”
Over the next three years, while continuing his studies in TV and video broadcasting at Iona, John Zerbo made the switch from stagehand to intern in the Talent Department, where he’s thriving today, working alongside people like Tom Hanks, Mick Jagger, Kristen Wiig, Jim Carrey and even Steven Spielberg.
John credits Iona for giving him a head start on his career. “Being an undergrad and having all these opportunities is something I’m super grateful for.” Through hands-on experience with the Iona College Television (ICTV) equipment, he learned to use the same sophisticated cameras and broadcast technology he would later need on the job at SNL. “The thing about Iona is that it helps you with your life in untraditional ways and it’s up to each student to find their niche.”
John has certainly found his. He chose Iona for its size and proximity to New York City. Today, he is part of the longest-running show on television and he hopes to be there a long time. “Maybe in 10 years, you’ll see my name on the credits: John Zerbo. Executive Producer.”
