Witnessing how diplomacy moves the world

Iona College was tailor made for Ryan Bacci, who had grown up in Queens, in the shadow of Manhattan, and always wanted to study international politics.“I was excited about going to a college that would enable me to work and intern in the city. Iona’s International Studies major was a perfect fit.”

As a sophomore in the Honors Program, Ryan got the opportunity he was looking for. His advisor, Professor Tricia Mulligan, chair of the Political Science Department, helped Ryan connect with a UN-affiliated NGO, The Sacred Heart of Mary, and the Department of Public Information at UN headquarters in NYC. “I gained invaluable experience in researching economic development in the Caribbean Basin, particularly in post-earthquake Haiti.”

It was a pivotal experience for Ryan. “After interning at the UN, I was sure that I wanted to continue studying economic development in the Caribbean–something I plan to pursue in grad school.” From there, Ryan has set his sights on the CIA or the State Department.

Between his studies, his RA duties and hours devoted to the swim team, Ryan has found time for other life-changing experiences. An Iona in Mission trip to Cochabamba, Bolivia, exposed him to indescribable poverty in developing countries. “My trip to Bolivia solidified my desire to continue studying international development and relations.” When he returned, he took on the job as treasurer of the Iona in Mission Committee, working to plan, coordinate and fund future mission trips, here and abroad.

Another benefit from his experience: “Working with the Christian Brothers opened my eyes to the legacy of Edmund Rice–a legacy that has reached all corners of the world.”
