Welcome Gaels!

As part of Iona College’s comprehensive approach to alcohol abuse and sexual assault prevention, all incoming undergraduates are required to complete AlcoholEdu for College and Haven, a sexual assault prevention program. These are thoughtful educational programs dealing with key issues to our community.  We selected these programs for you due to their science-based, non-opinionated approach that incorporates proven prevention theories and educational strategies that will help you understand many aspects of sexual assault and alcohol abuse. Whether you drink or not, AlcoholEDU will help you make well-informed decisions about alcohol and help you address the drinking behavior of your peers.  Haven utilizes customized course pathways for males and females providing a highly relevant and meaningful experience. These two courses are available to you starting on July 28, 2014.

AlcoholEDU has two parts, both of which must be completed.

Part I consists of the following:
  • Surveys 1 and 2
  • Program content
  • Pre-test and Exam
Part I takes about 1.5-2.5 hours to complete, and we recommend that you take it in multiple sittings. You must earn a grade of 75% or higher on the exam to successfully complete Part I by August 22nd. About 45 days after completing Part I, you will receive an email asking you to complete Part II by October 24th.

Part II consists of the following:
  • Survey 3
The course is strictly confidential; Iona College will only receive information about the student body as a whole and will NEVER see any responses by an individual student.

Haven is a one part program related to sexual assault prevention that will take you approximately 45 minutes to complete.  You must add this course to your dashboard after first scheduling AlcoholEdu.

We believe that the hallmark of an Iona education is grounded in our strong sense of community, which is enriched by our diversity and sustained by civility and mutual respect. Iona College is committed to your safety and wellbeing through fostering learning and growth opportunities in all aspects of your life, including strategies related to alcohol, sexual assault and Bystander Intervention.

How:

To take these courses, you will need a computer with Internet access and audio capabilities. If you do not have access to a computer, you can use any publicly available computer with Internet access that would be available at most libraries.

Why:

Studies show that college students are at the highest risk for alcohol abuse and sexual assault during their first two to three months on campus. To better prepare you to manage your transition to college life, we require all incoming undergraduate students to complete these online courses as one component of our commitment to providing a safe environment. Your ability to perform well at Iona College can only be enhanced by good physical and emotional health. This will enable you to develop the critical foundation necessary to sustain you now and throughout your life as you formulate your personal, academic and professional goals.
