My Iona

Externship Program

The externship program offers intensive clinical training and experience within a supportive, collegial environment. Eligible applicants are current doctoral students in APA accredited Clinical Psychology, Counseling Psychology, or School/Clinical Psychology, and second-year master's students in Mental Health Counseling.

The Iona University Counseling Center provides short-term individual and group therapy to undergraduate and graduate students of Iona University. Externs gain experience in working with individuals with a wide range of presenting concerns and clinical diagnoses. The Iona University Counseling Center operates from a short-term treatment model, and externs learn how to conduct treatment within that frame. The externship is designed to provide comprehensive clinical training in individual therapy, including intake evaluation, risk assessment, short-term therapy, and group therapy.

In addition, externs gain experience in the assessment of alcohol and other drug problems as they relate to college students. Externs rotate to a different supervisor midway through the externship in order to gain expertise in using a variety of theoretical approaches in psychotherapy. Our externship program provides weekly didactic seminars on topics of clinical interest, including emerging issues relevant to the treatment of a college student population.

Externs participate in weekly individual and group supervision, and they design and present psychoeducational workshops.

For full information on our externship, please visit the NYNJADOT Externship Portal.
