Information on Bank Accounts

Checking accounts allow you to deposit and withdraw money frequently and can be used to pay your monthly bills via check or electronically (if this feature is offered by your banking institution.) When you open a checking account it usually comes with checks and a bank card and allows you to use them to make purchases and pay bills. Often there are minimum monthly balances and service fees which vary by the type of account you open.

Savings accounts are for long term deposits for earning interest. The interest rates, minimum balances, and service fees vary from bank to bank. Savings accounts are generally not intended for daily expenses.

Most banks offer ATM (Automated Teller Machines) services. Usually banks will not charge extra fees when you are using your bank's own banking institution's ATM network. When you use an ATM in a store or at other banks, you may be charged an extra transaction fee.

When researching local bank branches, you should inquire about the specific requirements for opening an account. Examples of requirements for some of the banks listed below:

  • Passport
  • Enrollment verification letter on Iona College letterhead
  • A recognized brand credit card
  • A foreign driver's license
  • A school identification card
  • A voter registration card
  • Proof of residency in the United States (documents that show your address in the United States such as an apartment lease, utility bills, etc.
