Gael Community Ambassador Program 2014-2015

What is a Gael Community Ambassador?

Off-Campus and Commuter Services works to educate students moving into the community about being good neighbors, good citizens, and living Iona’s mission off-campus. It also works to build positive relationships with neighbors and city leaders to improve the quality of life off-campus for neighbors and students. The Gael Community Ambassador(s) will contribute to the Off-Campus and Commuter Services mission by:
  • Modeling appropriate off-campus student behavior,
  • Providing educational programs and resources to on and off-campus students (i.e. handouts, presentations, information tables, and residence hall outreach),
  • Serving as a liaison for off-campus students to Iona’s administration and the City of New Rochelle,
  • Maintaining a strong connection between Iona College and its off-campus students as well as between off-campus students and the Greater New Rochelle community,
  • Helping to build community among off-campus students,
  • Helping to increase civic engagement, civic responsibility, and good citizenship among off-campus students,
  • Helping to increase and improve communication with Iona’s neighbors,
  • Increasing collaboration with the greater New Rochelle community,
  • Improving the overall quality of life for members of the greater New Rochelle community, and
  • Encouraging local business patronage.

Meet Your Gael Community Ambassadors:

Jordan Courage

Jordan Courage is a junior at Iona College from Newcastle, CA.  She is majoring in International Studies.  Jordan is also a member of the Women’s Softball Team and President of the Student Athlete Advisory Committee.

Jordan’s favorite place in New Rochelle is Glen Island, because it is a nice escape from the chaos of daily life. Whenever she feels overwhelmed by finals or life in general, Jordan packs a picnic and heads to Glen Island with friends.  She finds it peaceful by the water, and the openness of the park is refreshing.

Jordan chose to be a GCA because her experience with the ambassadors last year made the stressful and overwhelming task of searching for off-campus housing a lot simpler. She also wants students to be more involved in New Rochelle.  Jordan thinks it is incredibly important to form good relationships with neighbors and support our local community.

Alex Juliano is a  junior at Iona College from New Haven, CT.  He is majoring in Marketing.  Alex is also a member of the Marketing Club and an executive board member of Iona’s new Colleges Against Cancer organization, which raised about $30,000 during its first Relay for Life in Spring 2014.

Alex’s favorite place to visit in New Rochelle is Hudson Park.  His favorite restaurant in New Rochelle is Dubrovnik, a Croatian restaurant located on Main Street.

Alex chose to be a GCA  to represent Iona in a positive way throughout New Rochelle and to create new relationships with people in the greater New Rochelle community.  He looks forward to being a link between New Rochelle and Iona.  This is Alex’s second year as an off-campus student.

Megan Jakobson

Megan Jakobson is a senior at Iona College from Danbury, CT.  She is majoring in Mass Communications with a minor in Fine and Performing Arts.  Megan is also President of Delta Theta Beta Sorority.

Megan’s favorite place in New Rochelle is Rochelle Park, a historic residential district.  She loves walking through the neighborhood and admiring the beautiful old houses.  Megan’s favorite restaurant in New Rochelle is the Indian restaurant Coromandel .

Megan chose to be a GCA because she has lived off-campus already, and while living off-campus she has met many neighbors.  Some of these neighbors have expressed frustration with Iona students.  She would like to help improve communication between students and neighbors and build positive relationships.
