Message from the President On behalf of the entire Iona College community, I welcome you to our website. As you explore the site, and perhaps visit our campus in the near future, you will find a unique place where students are immersed in an academic environment that both challenges and nurtures them to develop their many gifts.
This is an exciting time in Iona’s history. The College will soon be breaking ground to update and expand the main library. This project is funded by a new capital campaign, Visions of Excellence, which has already raised $12.4 million toward a goal of $14 million. The library already possesses cutting edge technology—including 52 brand new “dual boot” Macintosh computers—and this renovation will enable students to take full advantage of the possibilities this technology presents. Visions of Excellence follows closely on the heels of Iona’s last capital campaign, Vision into Reality, which raised over $83 million and dramatically changed the quality of student life at Iona by funding new construction. Impressive new buildings have both changed the face of the campus and elevated student life. The Hynes Athletics Center features a rowing tank, free weights and cardiovascular machines, dance and aerobics studios, 7800 square feet of multipurpose courts, a NCAA regulation basketball court, and a swimming pool. The facility enhances the experience of all students—not just the athletes—by offering diverse intramural and wellness options. The Robert V. LaPenta Student Union, a beautiful 41,000 square foot Georgian brick building, houses the campus bookstore, a food court and bistro, lounges, and space for clubs and student organizations. These two structures, along with the new residence halls which opened in 2003, provide students with the latest amenities. Apparently, applicants are taking notice—admissions applications have reached an all-time high. As an indicator of its academic excellence, Iona has achieved national accreditation in business, computer science, education, mass communication and social work; it is featured in The Princeton Review’s Best Northeastern Colleges and Best 282 Business Schools, 2007 editions, and US News & World Report’s “America’s Best Colleges 2007,” where it is among the top tier of Northeastern schools with master’s programs. Oxford University recognizes the quality of Iona’s curriculum through a partnership, in which accepted students have the opportunity to study at the legendary Blackfriars Hall in England during their junior year. Iona’s innovative and rigorous honors program provides a foundation many alumni have utilized in preparation for degrees in medicine, law and distinguished careers in corporate America. Iona educates the whole person through a core curriculum in the liberal arts and abundant extracurricular activities and events. At Iona, students not only accomplish their academic goals, they are also inspired to integrate the spiritual, intellectual, emotional and physical dimensions of their lives. Throughout the year, Iona students participate in over 60 student organizations, 21 NCAA Division I athletic teams and hundreds of volunteer options. They may also choose from numerous opportunities to earn credit in Australia, Ireland, Italy, France and Spain through our study abroad program. I invite you to visit our campus and experience the welcoming atmosphere, observe the challenging academics and investigate the fine opportunities that make Iona College a truly special place. Please feel free to contact a member of our community to schedule a visit, to discover more about Iona and how we can help you earn a degree that matters. Sincerely, (Br.) James A. Liguori, CFC
