Mission

The Department of Speech Communication Studies is dedicated to exploring the many dimensions of communication including interpersonal, small group, language development, communication disorders, public speaking, and clinical competence. In accordance with the overall mission of Iona College the department strives to offer students a multitude of opportunities to become independent and informed critical thinkers who can objectively examine current issues in terms of ethics and communication. The department offers students the ability to become strong, effective, and ethical communicators who are able to work in teams, talk with and among professionals from various fields, respect opinions that are different, and advocate for those unable to do so for themselves. The theories and skills learned in this department will carry students through Iona and beyond.

The Department of Speech Communication Studies seeks to:
  • Allow students the opportunity to take a variety of courses to explore the richness of the department's two majors; Speech Language Pathology and Audiology and Speech Communication. The faculty will use a variety of teaching strategies to ensure that all students are able to actively learn.
  • Instill in the department's majors, a sense of leadership so that they use effective communication qualities that have both clinical and professional application.
  • Highlight the importance multiculturalism, diversity, and social justice within the study of communication.
  • Recognize the communication difficulties that often effect individuals and societies. The department provides services to the Iona and local communities through its Speech Clinic, Audiology Lab, and Speakers' Center.
  • Provide academic advisement that not only prepares students for their years at Iona but for their futures in order to foster life-long learning. The department will show students how to apply the theories learned in Speech Communication Studies to their chosen careers, in graduate school, and their own lives.
  • To consistently assess and measure the quality of student's progress over time.
  • To support and encourage faculty development so that faculty may continue to share current and recent research in Speech Communication.
  • Create on-going communication with the department's alumni.
