The Speech and Language Hearing Clinic at Iona College, part of the Speech Communication Studies Department, was expanded in 2007 by its Department Chair Diane Ferrero-Paluzzi, PhD. Our Clinic Supervisor, Maria Armiento-DeMaria, holds a Certification of Clinical Competence in Speech-Language Pathology in accordance with the American Speech-Language Hearing Association (ASHA). She also holds a license in the State of New York and a Permanent Certificate as a Teacher of the Speech and Hearing Handicapped as well as license in the State of Connecticut.

The Speech Communications Department provides training for undergraduate students majoring in Speech-Language Pathology and Audiology. While our clinic serves as a training opportunity for students, every case is closely supervised by departmental faculty to insure the highest quality service to our clients and students.  Each of our faculty members has specific areas of expertise within the field of communication disorders and many are recognized for their research, textbooks and clinical abilities.

The clinic provides services to individuals of all ages. We receive referrals from Burke Rehabilitation Center as well as providing services to the local community. Speech and language services include but are not limited to articulation and phonological disorders, language impairments, aphasia, voice disorders, hearing disorders, fluency disorders, traumatic brain injury, and accent reduction. Services

Treatment: Individuals are provided with an appropriate intervention program based on specific needs. This may involve individual or group treatment. Sessions are usually held twice a week for total of one hour. Family members may observe or participate in these sessions. Our facility has state-of-the-art computer equipment to assist in the diagnosis and remediation of a variety of disorders.

Audiology Evaluations: Diagnostic hearing screenings are conducted to assess hearing status. If hearing loss is detected, recommendations are made concerning rehabilitative measures that may be of benefit to the individual.

Speech-Language Evaluations: Diagnostic evaluations are available and recommendations for treatment are made, along with appropriate referrals. The evaluation typically takes about two hours and involves an interview, testing, clinical observation, and consultation with the supervisor.

Hours

Charges for Service

The clinic currently charges a flat fee of $125 per semester for treatment.  Complete evaluations are provided at a reduced rate.  Fees are subject to change.
