Telecommunications Certificates

Certificates in Telecommunications

Mission: To provide students with the knowledge, skills, and experiences to become successful practitioners and leaders in the field of telecommunications.

REQUIREMENTS FOR THE CERTIFICATE IN TELECOMMUNICATIONS

Option 1: Focus on Networks
Required of students who lack a background in computer science. These course credits may not be applied toward the 36 credits required for the degree.
 

Core: All students must complete the following four courses: (12 credits)

TEL  600  Networking Fundamentals (3 credits)
TEL 630  Local Area Networks (3 credits)
TEL 660 Wide Area Networks (3 credits)
TEL 665 Local Area Network Implementation (3 credits)

Electives: All students must complete one of the following: (3 credits)
 
TEL  715  Website Design (3 credits)
TEL 735 TCP/IP (3 credits)
TEL 740 Maintaining and Troubleshooting Data Networks (3 credits)

Option 2: Focus on Web System Development

Transition: Required of students the corresponding background in computer science:
CS  500  Introduction to Computer Science I (4 credits)
CS 505 Introduction to Computer Science II (4 credits)

Core: All students must complete the following four courses: (12 credits)
TEL  604 Data Structures (3 credits)
TEL 715 Website Design (3 credits)
TEL 725 Web Technology (3 credits)
TEL 770 Web Application Development(3 credits)

To complete the program, those students who were not required to complete CS 500 and CS 505 will choose one other elective, chosen from the TEL offerings in consultation with the program director.

NOTE: Students who graduate at Iona with an MS in Computer Science degree may transfer a maximum of six credits in telecommunications from the degree program to the certificate program. Contact the department for permission and details.

ADMISSIONS

Students requesting admission into the program must submit:

  1. Completed application.
  2. Evidence of completion of a bachelor’s degree with a cumulative 2.5 grade point average (GPA).
  3. Demonstration of the required competencies with written approval of the program coordinator or department chair.
  4. Payment of the application fee.
