These Student Learning Outcomes support the Mission Statement of the department, as they require students to:

1. Establish an identity as a professional marriage and family therapist with an awareness of ethical conduct that promotes justice, peace, and civic responsibility.
2. Understand the theoretical and philosophical constructs of marriage and family therapy.
3. Assess problems in human and family development, utilizing intellectual inquiry and critical thinking to inform and communicate professional judgments.
4. Understand and apply clinical knowledge, utilizing appropriate interventions.
5. Integrate research with clinical skills and knowledge, adapting to new information and technologies.
6. Apply an understanding of diversity issues to advance human rights and social and economic justice.

These Student Learning Outcomes are derived from the AAMFT Core Competencies, the AMFTRB Guidelines, and the Professional Marriage and Family Therapy Standards and Educational Guidelines of the COAMFTE.

The Competency Practice Behaviors within each of the above primary domains are further focused on the types of skills or knowledge that MFT's must develop. These skills are: a) Conceptual, b) Perceptual, c) Executive, d) Evaluative, and e) Professional.
