Economics Department Student Learning Outcomes for core course students:
- Students should be able to apply standard microeconomic and/or macroeconomic models to explain economic outcomes.
- Students should be able to analyze current economic issues employing argumentation, written communication, mathematical models, and graphical analysis.
- Students should be able to use the skills and knowledge gained to contribute meaningfully in the post-college marketplace.
- Students should have a basic understanding of macroeconomics and/or microeconomics that will enable them to succeed in both academic and professional post-undergraduate pursuits.
- Students should be able to analyze a current economic issue from both a normative and positive perspective and relate the issue to Iona's core values.
Economics Department Student Learning Outcomes for BA & BS degree candidates:
- Economics majors will be able to apply standard microeconomic theories to explain the behavior of individuals, businesses, and industries in market-based systems.
- Economics majors will be able to apply standard macroeconomic theories to explain the behavior of industrialized macro economies.
- Economics majors will be able to explain the role of government in promoting economic well-being, regulating economic activity and correcting for market failures.
- Economics majors will be able to think critically about the ethical and moral implications of choices made by individuals, businesses and governments.
- Economics majors will be able to construct judicious and convincing arguments and present them effectively in written reports and oral presentations.
- Economics majors will be able to logically conduct analyses of current economic issues using mathematical models, equations, graphs, databases, statistical inference and software.
B.S. degree candidates have the following additional learning outcome:
- B.S. degree majors will be able to utilize matrix algebra, differential calculus, maximization and minimization techniques, and integral calculus to examine economic issues
