Dr. James Stillwaggon is the former President of the Middle Atlantic States Philosophy of Education Society and currently is the Assistant Director of the Honors Program.
Dr. James Stillwaggon's scholarship focuses on the public structures within which the human subject emerges as a product of its education. Drawing from the work of Plato and Jacques Lacan, from popular film and literature as well as the history of democratic education in the United States, his work describes education as the production of a doubly-binding relationship. On the one hand, human subjects come to rely on public structures of discourse for their sense of identity and belonging; on the other, those same public structures would disappear if not for the participation of the public in their maintenance and reproduction.
Recent papers include "Performing for the Students: Teaching Identity and the Pedagogical Relation" (Journal of Philosophy of Education, Vol. 42, No. 1) and "Inviolable Laws, Impossible to Keep: Orwell on Education, Suffering and the Loss of Childhood" (Educational Theory, in press).
Dr. James Stillwaggon is a member of the American Educational Research Association (AERA), the Philosophy of Education Society (PES), and the American Educational Studies Association (AESA). He currently serves as president of the Middle Atlantic States Philosophy of Education Society (MASPES).
