PROGRAM: Dual Certification in Early Childhood/Childhood Education

Degree: Master of Science in Teaching (MST)

Master of Science in EducationThe Master of Science in Teaching programs are intended for those seeking initial teaching certification in Early Childhood/Childhood, or Adolescence Education. Most students in this program work full-time and pursue the degree on a part-time basis, averaging six credits per semester. Degree requirements vary and you will work with your advisor to develop your program plan. For qualified students, Iona offers the “Transition B” program as a shortened pathway to certification.

Students who have completed the program, including teaching experience, and completed the other requirements set by New York State, may apply for initial teaching certification in New York State

Out-of-classroom activities required:
Ten hours of fieldwork are required for every education class.

Internship/practicum required for degree completion:
Supervised student teaching for one semester or alternative method as approved by the faculty

Required academic preparation or background experience:
Specific prerequisites and minimum undergraduate GPA

Admission requirements:

  • Application for admission
  • Official transcripts from all colleges attended
  • Three professional letters of recommendation
  • Minimum GPA 2.95 (minimum GPA of 3.0 for "Transition B")
  • GRE examination if cumulative undergraduate GPA is below 2.95 with a minimum score of 500 verbal and 500 quantitative
  • Interview required for "Transition B" applicants
  • Autobiography/statement on desire to enter the teaching profession
  • Satisfactory completion of all prerequisites as determined by the MST evaluation (can begin the program if within 6 credits of completing prerequisites)
