John N. Colaneri Scholarship for Language Study Abroad

colaneri

Professor Colaneri taught full-time in the Modern Languages Department at Iona College from 1959 until retirement in 2002, and 14 years part-time at The College of New Rochelle. During his career at Iona he was moderator of the Italian Club, served multiple terms as Chair of the department, and developed the International Studies program. In addition, he authored several books to accompany the study of Italian and conducted tours for language students of all ages to Italy, Spain, Portugal, Greece, and Egypt. Although he mainly taught Italian language, culture, and literature, he knew French, Spanish, Portuguese and began the study of Japanese. In recognition of his dedication to the promotion of second-language acquisition for all Americans and his commitment to the values and ideals of a liberal arts education, his family and friends created this fund to encourage the study of language in international settings.
