Hiriart-Valladares Scholarships for Spanish Study in Span

Dr. Rosario Hiriart, longtime professor at Iona College, has established two summer scholarships, one for graduate and another for undergraduate studies, in memory of her late husband, Mr. Jorge J. Valladares. In order to encourage the study of the Spanish language and culture, Iona College students of Spanish are invited to apply for this unique opportunity to further their Spanish language skills in Spain

Qualifications

  • Undergraduate Scholarship

    In order to qualify for the Undergraduate Scholarship you must be a full-time Spanish major or minor at Iona College or be in Education with a concentration in Spanish. The applicant should be a sophomore or Junior at the time of the application with a cumulative GPA of at least 3.0 and with a 3.2 in Spanish. The candidate for the scholarship should have already applied to a Spanish Language Program in Spain that is affiliated with an American University or to a recognized Program approved by the FL Department Chair and the Office of the Dean in order to receive credits accepted by Iona College.
  • Graduate Scholarship

    The Graduate applicant for a Hiriart-Valladares Scholarship should be enrolled in one of Iona Spanish Masters Programs and have a cumulative index of at least 3.5. Acceptance into a University Graduate Program in Spain along with the approvals noted in the conditions for the Undergraduate Scholarship are necessary.

  • Completion of the Hiriart-Valladares Scholarship Form
  • Two letters of recommendation one of which should be from your Spanish teacher
  • A copy of your Iona College transcript
  • A commitment to write a full report of your experience upon return to the USA

About Mr. JORGE J. VALLADARES

Mr. Jorge J. Valladares was a very distinguished business man who went to Oklahoma University to study petroleum engineering. He then decided to finish his degree in Business Administration. He worked for various international and USA based oil organizations until he created his own company, Orbi Petroleum. Based on his experience and knowledge, he lectured extensively at Universities and Centers of Studies. He loved classical music and attended concerts around the world. He married Rosario Hiriart. Dr. Hiriart studied at New York University, from where she received her PhD (Summa Cum Laude), and taught at Iona College for many years. The first woman Professor at Iona, she prepared the Graduate Spanish Program,. Leaving Iona, Dr. Hiriart decided to dedicate her time to creative and scholarly writing. As a well known author, she has since published more than 30 books of fiction and critical studies. Both Rosario and Jorge were born in Cuba, came as exiles with their parents, and as Americans became real New Yorkers. Gracious hosts in their residence of more than three decades in Scarsdale, NY, they also traveled with great intellectual interest through the Americas, Europe, and Asia. In addition to their New York home, they maintained a residence in Madrid to better avail of the beauty and charm of that European capital
