Graduate Courses:

SPA 720. History of the Spanish Language
This course will examine the evolution of the Spanish language from Latin.  It will also include a study into the dialectical variations and how this occurred.  This course will only be offered by computer. (3 credits)

SPA 730. Approaches to Literary Studies
This course will examine specialized concepts in research for the student in the culture or literature of Spain or Spanish America. Guided instruction will be provided in the critical principles of the interpretation of prose and poetry.  This curse will compare the major themes of Spanish, French, and Italian literature.  The seminar will be conducted in Spanish.  (3 credits)

SPA 750. Medieval Spanish Literature
A study and examination will be made of selected literature of the Middle Ages through readings, analysis and discussion. This course covers the literary period from the medieval lyric, "las jarchas" to the fifteenth century tragicomedy "La Celestina." (3 credits)

SPA 752. Spanish Poetry from the Mystics to the Twentieth Century
Selected readings and analyses will be made of the works of representative poets from the sixteenth century to the present. (3 credits)

SPA 753. Don Quixote by Miguel de Cervantes
The masterpiece, "Don Ouixote", will be considered from a structural and stylistic point of view. Critical interpretations of the novel through the centuries will be examined. Cervantes' role as the creator of the modern contemporary novel is explored. (3 credits)

SPA 755. Neoclassicism in Spain
A study will be made of the enlightenment period of the eighteenth century covering its essayists, poets and playwrights. The works of such major figures as Feijoo, Luzán, Cadalso, Jovellanos, Villarroel, Fernandez de Moratín, Meléndez Valdés and Quintana will be examined. (3 credits)

SPA 757. Realism and Naturalism in the Nineteenth-Century Spanish Novel
An analysis and interpretation will be made of the content and structure of modern fiction from "Costumbrismo" to the naturalistic novelists. Special emphasis will be placed on the work of Pérez Gáldos. (3 credits)

SPA 759. The Contemporary Spanish Novel
An interpretation and analysis will be made of the major authors of the contemporary period including Camilo José Cela, Ana María Matute, Delibes, Sánchez Ferlosio, Francisco Ayala, and others. (3 credits)

SPA 761. The Contemporary Spanish Theatre and Poetry
Contemporary Spanish theatre and poetry will be analyzed and reviewed as a reflection of the philosophical and social problems of present day Spain. The plays of Garcia Lorca, Casona, Buero Vallejo, and Sastre, etc., and the poetry of García Lorca, Salinas, Guillen, Hierro, Alexandre, and others will be considered. (3 credits)

SPA 763. The Prose and Poetry of the Golden Age
A critical study will be made of the principal novelists and poets of the Spanish Renaissance and the Baroque Period. Special consideration will be given to an analysis of the influence of these works on contemporary authors. (3 credits)

SPA 764. The Theater of the Golden Age
An examination will be made of the important cultural - contributions of the Spanish dramatists from the popular plays of Lope de Vega to the philosophical ,-) theater of Calderón de la Barca. (3 credits)

SPA 765. Spanish Romanticism
A study will be made of the romantic literature with special emphasis on the romantic rebel. The values and attitudes implicit in rebellion will be contrasted with our times. (3 credits)

SPA 766. The Culture of Contemporary Spain
An examination will be made of present day Spanish culture as reflected in the current literature and ways of life. An in-depth study will be made of the conflict between Spain's desire to be a modern nation and the wish to keep the culture and heritage of the past. (3 credits)

SPA 800. Spanish American Colonial Literature
A study and examination will be made of selected literature of the colonial era through readings, analysis, an discussion.  This course covers literature from the explorers to the Baroque period. (3 credits)

SPA 801. Spanish-American Romanticism
A study will be made of the native and European origins of Spanish-American Romanticism through an examination of the most significant literature of the nineteenth century. (3 credits)

SPA 802. Poetry from Modernism to the Present
A study will be made of the poetry of the pre- modernists, modernists, and the post-modernists. The influences of the social, economic, political and philosophical climate on contemporary poetry will be explored. (3 credits)

SPA 803. The Spanish-American Contemporary Narrative
A study will be made of the present outstanding novelists of Spanish America. The course will concentrate on those works which are most relevant to a thorough understanding of the cultural forces at work in Spanish America today. The authors to be studied include Jorge Luis Borges, Juan Rulfo, Alejo Carpentier, Gabriel García Márquez, Vargas Llosa, Carlos Fuentes and others. (3 credits)

SPA 804. The Theatre in Spanish America
A study and analysis will be made of Spanish-American theatre from the contributions of SorJuana Inés de la Cruz to the present. (3 credits)

SPA 805. lndianista, lndigenista and Gaucho Literature
A study will be made of the evolution in literary treatment given to the "indios."  The most
representative works of lndianismo and lndigenismo literature will be examined.  The gaucho as a literary figure will also be studied through the poetry, novels and drama of Spanish America. (3 credits)

SPA 806. The Culture and Literature of the Caribbean
A study will be made of the ethnic influences on the culture and literature of the countries in the Caribbean. Various aspects of the culture will be explored including the history, music, art and religion. The major focus will be on Puerto Rico. (3 credits) Puerto Rico will be examined in light of these problems. (3 credits)

SPA 809. The Culture of Spanish America
A comparative study will be made of the evolution and present status of culture in the countries of Spanish America. Similarities and contrasts of the cultural experiences of the United States and Spanish America will be discussed. (3 credits)

SPA 810. The Literature of Revolution in Spanish America
A study will be made of the trends of thought in Spanish-American revolutionary literature from the genesis of the ideas of revolt in political romanticism to the intense ideological reform and revolutionary demands projected in the works of contemporary writers. (3 credits)

SPA 900. Summer in Spain Program in Madrid
A four-week program of study will be provided for students while residing at the Colegio Mayor San Pablo in Madrid. Specific courses offered will be announced in a separate brochure. (6 credits)

SPA 980. Culminating Experience
This course is required for the completion of the MS in Education/Secondary (Spanish). Under the supervision of a faculty member approved by the department chair, the student shall prepare a special project which reflects the student's interests and course of study. The project may focus on the application of a particular methodology to the teaching of Spanish, may result from a period of study in a Spanish speaking country, or may examine the culture or literature of Spain or Spanish America. The student shall submit an outline or description of the proposed study to the faculty advisor prior to registration. Prerequisite: Completion of 18 credits in Spanish and permission of the department chair. (3 credits)

SPA 981 Thesis
The student will select a thesis topic in consultation with a faculty advisor. Once the topic has been approved the student must draw up an outline to be presented to the mentor. When the outline is approved the student, under the direction of the mentor, will research and write the thesis. May be repeated once with the permission of the department chair. (3 credits)

SPA 990. Special Topics
A pertinent topic will be selected by the Chair of the Modern Language Department. Topics will be drawn from a full gamut of the literary possibilities of contemporary Spain and Hispanic America.(3 credits)

SPA 991. Masters of Spanish Literature
An in depth study of all genres of production in one of the great writers of Spanish literature through reading, analysis, and discussion.  Some of the featured writers could include Cervantes, Lope de Vega, Valle-Inclán, Borges, and García Márquez. (3 credits)

SPA 999. Independent Study
This course will provide an opportunity for the serious student to engage in directed research or analysis in the culture or literature of Spain or Spanish America. The student must select an advisor from the department who will grant written approval for a chosen topic. Then a written proposal will be submitted by the student and approved by the advisor prior to registration. An interim report will be followed by the submission of the final document prior to the determination of the final grade. Available only in fall and spring semesters. May be repeated once for credit with the permission of the department. Admission only with the approval of the department chair. (3 credits)
