PR 601 Theories of Communication
A study of the theories, processes, systems, models and effects of human communication with emphasis on mass communication. (3 credits)
PR 604 Applied Communications Research
A survey of research methods used by professional communicators. Methodologies include survey, content analysis, case study, interview, focus group, opinion polls and broadcast ratings. Not open to those who have taken COM 604. (3 credits)
PR 605 Media Law and Ethics
A study of the principles of communications law with a special emphasis on First Amendment issues, broadcasting and advertising regulations and copyright laws; this course also explores ethical issues related to the formulation of policy decisions and competition, as well as legislation and self-regulation. Not open to those who have taken COM 605. (3 credits) Co-listed as JRN 605.
PR 609 Writing for the Media
An advanced course in writing for the mass media from the public relations and corporate communications perspective. COM 609. (3 credits)
PR 611 Corporate Communication
This course presents an overview of the principles and practices of corporate communications in a modern society. It examines internal and external forms of communication for message design, promotional strategy, issue scanning and reputation management. It explores how to create and implement corporate communication plans that provide outreach to an organization's key stakeholders and how to evaluate the effectiveness of those plans. (3 credits)
PR 613 Organizational Communication
Theories and practices related to the management of the communication processes in organizations. Focus on networks, decision-making, interaction formats, and communication audit. Not open to those who have taken COM 613. (3 credits)
PR 615 Principles of Public Relations
Study of the theory of public relations, its functions in organizations and its role in society, the historical development of the field, and the concepts and theories related to public relations program planning and management. Not open to those who have taken COM 615. (3 credits)
PR 616 Public Relations Campaigns
The planning, preparation, execution and control of public relations campaigns including the presentation of the campaign for approval; the use of research and the coordination of the various elements including message selection, choice of appropriate media technologies, design, strategies, budgeting and follow-up structures (Prerequisite: COM 615). Not open to those who have taken COM 627. (3 credits)
PR 617 Media Relations
This course presents the skills and theories of successful relations between PR practitioners and media outlets. The sudy of approaches, successful practices, cases and media requirements, based on best techniques of agencies and corporate PR departments will inform activities and pro-active planning that will enable organizations to develop positive and synergistic media relations with press, broadcast, internet and other outlets. (3 credits)
PR 618 Public Relations for Non-Profit Organizations
A specialized course that examines and analyzes the functions of non-profit public relations in society and covers techniques, communication methods, media, and research methodologies for promoting and publicizing accomplishments and aims. the course also examines non-profit communication programs. (3 credits)
PR 621 Writing for Organizations
A hands-on course in writing executive letters, annual reports, and copy for institutional advertising, brochures, house organs and promotional literature. Not open to those who have taken COM 618. (3 credits)
PR 622 Electronics Graphics and Publication Design
A hands-on course in electronic graphics design for print and the web that will familiarize students with both the technical and conceptual aspects of information visualization. Publication design for newspapers, newsletters and magazines as well as Website design will be covered. (3 credits) Co-listed with JRN 622
PR 623 Fund Raising for Institutional Development
The analysis of the communication needs of non-profit organizations in areas such as healthcare, education and public service, and the means of implementing those needs with focus on the techniques of eliciting public support and fundraising. Not open to those who have taken COM 623. (3 credits)
PR 624 Business and Professional Presentations
A course in public speaking and speech writing in the context of organizational communication and public relations. Areas of study include audience analysis, message selection and delivery with the use of audio-visual aids; techniques of handling the media through press conferences, briefings and meetings. Not open to those who have taken COM 624. (3 credits)
PR 625 International Communication
A survey of the communications systems of leading nations of the world and of the social, economic, and political factors that influence them, critical examination of problems such as international communications flow and the world information order; study of their impact on the operations of international and multi-national corporations and agencies. Not open to those who have taken COM 625. (3 credits)
PR 628 PR for Entertainment and Sports
This course offers intensive study of an area of public relations specialization by examining essential elements of entertainment and sports public relations with an emphasis on strategies, campaigns, media relations, careers, publicity writing and promotional materials (3 credits)
PR 629 Converged Techniques
This course provides a critical and analytic perspective that can be used to analyze the uses of and creation of converged communication products, services and ventures, with a particular emphasis on emerging and new communication technologies from historical, business, financial, technologucal, consumer and policy perspectives. Applications will include corporate communication, entertainment and public relations. (3 credits) Co-listed with JRN 629
PR 631 Integrated Marketing Communications
A study of the concepts of marketing and its application in public relations. The emerging relationship between advertising, marketing and public relations is also explored. Not open to those who have taken COM 631. (3 credits)
PR 638 Investor Relations
This course provides an overview of corporation investor relations. Through investor relations, a combination of finance and marketing, public companies communicate with their shareholders and market their company's stock as investment. Not open to those who have taken CMA 638. (3 credits)
PR 639 Community and Government Relations
This course will provide an in-depth analysis of how community relations are practiced as part of an overall public relations and communications program. The integration of community relations and government affairs will be emphasized through case studies. Not open to those who have taken COM 639. (3 credits)
PR 691-695 Special Topics In Communication
A course designed to provide a seminar study opportunity in a specific area of interest to students or to explore current developments in organizational communication and public relations. (Contact the program director for further information; not more than two special topics permitted.) (3 credits)
PR 699 Internship in Communication
The internship offers students hands-on experience in the field of corporate communication and public relations. It is open only to students who have completed a substantial part of their course work in good academic standing. Not open to those who have taken COM 699 (Prerequisite: Permission from program director). (3 credits)
PR 799 Independent Study in Communications
An opportunity for directed research in an area of corporate communication and public relations, not covered by course offerings. The project will be supervised by a faculty advisor. Admission only with the written approval of the program director; only one Independent Study is permitted. (3 credits)
PR 980 Thesis/ Project Proposal Seminar
Directed research in a seminar format culminating in the submission of the written proposal for the master's thesis. Contact the program director for written permission and advisement. (3 credits)
PR 981 Thesis/ Project
Preparation of the master's thesis or major project under the guidance ofa faculty mentor. Admission to this course is open only to those who have successfully completed the Thesis/ Project Proposal Seminar. Contact the program director for written permission and advisement.
