MS in Teaching - Adolescence Education (7-12): Mathematics

The Department of Mathematics, in conjunction with the Department of Education, offers a Master of Science in Teaching (MST) with a concentration in mathematics designed for students with bachelor's degrees who seek careers in teaching adolescence education but lack formal training in teacher education. Students seeking entry into this program must have completed 21 credits of undergraduate mathematics courses that include Calculus I and II, Statistics and Discrete Mathematics. The MST program combines graduate-level mathematics with professional education courses designed to satisfy the academic requirements for the New York State Teaching Certificate. Thus, it provides courses and experiences necessary for planning and assessing instructional activities for students from a variety of backgrounds and needs. The required mathematics credits include courses in Analysis, Algebra, Geometry and Foundations. The program's culminating experience combines mathematics and educational theory with classroom experience in an original research project which produces a Master's thesis.
