Clubs and Activities

The Iona College Republicans and the Department of Political Science and International Studies sponsored an evening with the Honorable Janet DiFiore. The Westchester County District County spoke about transcending partisanship in the DA's office.

Iona College was, until the Fall of 2001, a campus lacking in political astuteness. With the coming of the Iona College Republicans in the Fall of 2001, that all began to change. At that time the Department of Political Science was coupled with the Department of History. However, in the Fall of 2003, the Department of History and Political Science underwent a change, a very significant change. The Department of Political Science became its own independent entity. This allowed politics to further at Iona College. Though still on their own, the Iona College Republicans grew in strength and numbers, spreading the political ideal throughout Iona College.

Finally, in the Spring of 2004, two more clubs began to form. The first was the Model UN club and the second, the Iona College Democrats. Direct rivals to the Iona College Republicans, the Iona College Democrats evened out the playing field, promoting the Democrat ideology on campus. The Model UN club set out to establish themselves as a club that promoted the United Nations. Alike to the Mock Trail, the Model UN club will attend conferences and participate in forums and simulations concerning the United Nations and its member countries.

Both of these clubs took their first steps in the Spring of 2004 but became known in the Fall of 2004. Additionally, Iona is now home to a chapter of Pi Sigma Alpha, the national political science honor society. Political science majors now have the opportunity of a lifetime to be part of this exclusive and well recognized organization that isn't just limited to Iona College but to the United States of America as a whole.

With each new club and activity comes more force for the Department of Political Science. With a growing number of declared majors and a growing enthusiasm for the political, the Department of Political Science offers a taste-of-honey for everyone who is interested and can accommodate everyone, regardless of their beliefs.
