Does the program lead to licensure?
Yes, program is license-qualifying in New York State

Examinations required for licensure: New York State exam

Clinical hours required for licensure: 3,000 - all of which must be accumulated after the MA degree is awarded

Specific Focus of program:
Applying Mental Health Counseling skills in a variety of settings

Key features:

  • The only program in Westchester County that is approved at the 2009 standard levels. License-preparation offered by other area colleges will not be valid for NYS licensure after 2009.
  • Focus on master’s (rather than doctoral) level students
  • Students frequently present their studies at professional psychology conferences such as the Eastern Psychological Association or the New York State Psychological Association
  • Excellent faculty, with virtually all courses taught by full-time faculty
  • State-of-the-art computing environment

Calendar:
Semester (summer classes as needed)
Two hours, one evening a week
Some classes may start as early as 4:15 pm

Fall, spring (spring entry may be limited by program capacity)

Application deadline: February 1 is strongly suggested

Average course load per term:
Years 1 & 2: 4 courses (three credits each)
Year 3: 2 courses
Part-time study is possible but will lengthen the time to complete the degree. The degree must be completed within 5 years of the commencement of the program.

Credits to completion: 60

Average time to complete degree: 3 years

Internship/practicum required for degree completion:
600 hours is considered by New York State as one year of experience and maybe fulfilled over one or two semesters, supervised by an approved professional and accompanied by a campus-based seminar

Preferred academic preparation or background experience:
Degree in Psychology or by permission of the faculty

Admission requirements:

  • Application for admission
  • Official transcripts from all colleges attended
  • Two professional letters of recommendation
  • Minimum GPA of 3.0 (admission with undergrad below 3.0 by permission of the faculty)
  • Acceptable performance in statistics and research methods/experimental research design courses at the undergraduate level
