Psychology Department Mission Statement
- Students require an understanding of the scientific method. Scientific methods of psychology are applied across
the spectrum of human behavior. Students need practical, science-grounded training in how to frame, test, and evaluate
hypotheses. These hypotheses are drawn from the real, practical problems that persons face as they lead their lives.
Successful psychologists rely on the scientific method to enhance their own and others' lives. Students need a grasp
of the experimental and quantitative pitfalls which can mar personal and professional activity directed at helping
others.
- Psychologists have developed an impressive array of problem solving techniques. Psychologists today influence
the quality of life of millions of people by their ingenuity at human problem solving. Students need to know how
human problems can be resolved through the application of psychological procedures, practices, scientific skills,
and problem solving strategies
- Many psychologists who work in the public and private sectors, business and industry, in clinics and schools,
in the military and in executive positions, hold a large data base of facts and findings which directly impact the
placement, training, development and careers of other human beings. Psychology is one of the fastest growing occupations
because human talent is critical to a technological, information-centered society. Students require the ability
to utilize the scientific database of psychology to advance civilized living.
- Psychology's focus on the scientific prediction, control, and understanding of human behavior is a rich source
for improving the quality of living. Techniques of cooperation, social facilitation, listening, and self-improvement
are only some of psychology's rich scientific methodologies that can be used on complex social problems and personal
family well being. The human equation is the central one to improvement and living productive and peaceful lives.
