Mission Statement

The Iona College Social Work Department is committed to academic excellence in the education and professional development of generalist social work practitioners. Through both classroom and extensive field experiences, students are immersed in social work theory and values as they strive for the acquisition of social work skills required for entry level practice. The department is particularly dedicated to the principles of social and economic justice, diversity, and service to those at risk in our society.

Graduates of the Iona College Social Work Department will be sought after because they

  • Possess a solid social work knowledge base, informed and enriched by the body of social work research and literature, complimented by a liberal arts foundation and extensive fieldwork experiences.
  • Are committed to social work values and ethics.
  • Embrace diversity in all its forms.
  • Are informed citizens who understand changing social contexts and are committed to social and economic justice.
  • Possess a broad range of social work skills that prepare them for work with systems at various levels.
  • Possess critical thinking, practice evaluation, and resourceful problem-solving skills.
  • Become life-long learners with a commitment to knowledge as the basis for personal and professional growth.
  • Engage in continual professional self-assessment and utilize appropriate supervision to enhance their own social work practice.
  • Are prepared to meet both the human service needs that predated the events of September 11, 2001 and those that have surfaced in its wake.

The Iona College Social Work Department is equally dedicated to pursuing teaching excellence and scholarship; to serving as a vital resource to the Iona, local, and greater New York metropolitan communities; as well as to advancing the purposes and mission of the profession.
