Students will have an opportunity to compete for admission in the Oxford Nanoscience Program during the summer.
In 2011, four outstanding Iona College undergraduate students in science and two faculty had the privilege of participating in an exceptional learning opportunity at Oxford University at the five-day 2011 Nanomedicine Summer School Program. This gave these students the opportunity to gain exposure to cutting-edge science and technology while experiencing the culture of one of the world's most renowned and oldest universities. It also provided an excellent opportunity for students to network on an international scale as well as to work directly with world renowned professors. The result was positive with the students able to apply knowledge gained to their ongoing academic pursuits.
Selection Criteria: The applicant must, at minimum: (1) be an Iona student with a Major in a science and mathematics program with junior standing, (2) have demonstrated scholarly promise with a Science GPA 3.5 or above, (3) provide a detailed statement of interest in their discipline and their future goals including essay demonstrating their desire to pursue and potential to succeed in a career in Science, and (4) demonstrate research potential as evidenced in one or more letters of recommendation from a faculty mentor.
Selection Process: The coordinator of the program (Sunghee Lee, PhD) will solicit nominations of promising undergraduates for the Oxford Summer Nanoscience Program in early January. The coordinator and Dean will review application materials and invite the selected best candidates for an interview. The finalist will be notified in late March, based on the selection criteria listed above.
Oxford Nanotechnology Summer School is comprised of (1) five-day intensive course providing an introduction to the emerging field of bionanotechnology and (2) two-day weekend course "Nano-Scale Materials Characterization" (at Begbroke Science Park) providing an introduction to the most widely-used techniques for materials characterization for nanoparticles, thin films and nano-structures.
