Message from the Dean

We began this year by welcoming nine new faculty to the School of Arts and Science: Dr. Kathleen Kristian, Chemistry; Dr. Paolina Centonze, Computer Science; Dr. Nicoleta Iliescu, Economics; Dr. Jennifer Bacon, Education; Dr. Stephanie Wexler-Robock, Education; Dr. Joshua Leon, Political Science; Dr. Shaki Asgari, Psychology; Dr. Albert Brockwell, Psychology; and Dr. Ann Heekin, Religious Studies. In a very short period of time and throughout a very busy first year on campus, each of these faculty members has already made important contributions to the college.

As these new faculty members are about to finish their first year, we are also saying goodbye to some of our most cherished friends and colleagues. Among the faculty in the School of Arts and Science who are retiring this year:

  • Alex Delfini, Philosophy, 31 years of service
  • Br. Robert Durning, CFC, MA Religious Studies, 28 years of service
  • John Mallozzi, PhD, Computer Science, 30 years of service
  • Keitha Murray, PhD, Computer Science, 27 years of service
  • Thomas Pendleton, PhD, English, 53 years of service

We are grateful to them for their collective 169 years of service and most importantly, their collegiality and generosity. While it is never easy to say goodbye, we wish them all well in their future endeavors and hope they return to campus often.

On a personal note, it has been a year of transitions for me as well. I started out the 2011-2012 academic year feeling confident that during my second year as Honors Director I would have more time to focus on my research and other things I had put off during the previous year. I even went so far as to register for conferences and put my house on the market. It wasn't to be, by mid-fall, I had agreed to serve as Interim Dean and everything I had planned was put on hold (except the house, which was already under contract)! I am deeply grateful for your support, friendship, and patience during this transition. While unexpected, it has truly been an honor to serve in this capacity.

I wish you all a restful, safe, and productive summer.
