Iona College Speaker Talks Religion, Politics Rev. Dr. Derrick Harkins, director of faith outreach for the Democratic National Committee (DNC), spoke to Iona College students and faculty at Iona's annual Rudin/Driscoll lecture. Dr. Harkins spoke on "Faith, Values and the Public Square." He said, "Though it is important to not engage in partisan politics, if it was not for the voices of the faithful, a lot of what we see today would not have or be taking place." See news article. |

Iona College Celebrates Employee Service Achievement at the Annual Loftus Dinner Each year Iona celebrates the long-term service of staff, faculty and administration at the Loftus Dinner and honors those members of the Iona family who have reach 20, 30, 40, and 50 year career milestones. This year there were 18 honorees at the awards dinner held on April 18, at the Davenport Club in New Rochelle, NY. See Press Release. |

United Nations International Leadership Series: “Indigenous Rights” On Friday, April 20th, the Department of Political Science and International Studies and Office of Mission and Ministry took a student group to participate in the Lower Hudson Valley Consortium of Catholic Colleges and Universities to New York City to participate in an International Leadership Program focusing on “Indigenous Rights”. They attended a morning session at the Salvation Army with a panel discussion on the challenges of colonization and the current debates on the rights of Indigenous Peoples. In the afternoon, students participated in meetings at the Mission to the UN of Brazil, Chile, Cuba, or Panama. |

| Social Work Deparment's Spring Field Education Workshop, How Do I Make This Decision? Ethical Dilemmas and Self-Awareness, was held at Iona College on Friday, March 30 for the Social Work Programs of The College of New Rochelle, Concordia College and Iona College. Forty-eight field instructors, students and faculty members attended this workshop, which had the highest attendance ever of the department's workshops. | |
| Charles Callaway, a staff member at WE ACT for Environmental Justice (www.weact.org), was invited to speak in a Social Work course entitled Sustainability and Community. He discussed several environmental justice campaigns in which he has been directly involved, including pesticides, issues related to a bus depot, and garbage. | |
