Opening welcome by Laurie Wenchell to all constituents who attended our first open SAC Meeting. A brief introduction followed about the purpose of SAC in relation to college governance and how this committee can be made accessible to all.

I. Approval of Minutes of February 8, 2005 SAC Meeting

Unanimously approved.

II. Report from the College Council Standing Committees

A) Athletics

The Committee and will meet March 15, 2005.

B) Information Technology and Computing

The Committee met online.

The IT Committee approved the suggestion that Joanne Steele and IT proceed with the installation of desktop images, matching the needs of the various departments on the podium machines in labs across campus. This action is being taken in response to IT’s problems in reference to indiscriminate downloading and installation of software, which has proven to be difficult or impossible to uninstall, and runs the risk of increasing the chances of computer viruses.

C) Student Affairs

The Committee has not met all year. A call was made to Charlie Carlson.

D) Institutional Advancement

Minutes submitted by Nancy Patota.

E) Human Resources and Compensation

No meeting.

F) Budget

No meeting.

III. Follow-up to Campus Outreach

Nomination ballots and voting process was explained. Materials were sent out to all staff and administrators on campus. Discussion of outreach efforts ensued.

Iona ’s ongoing Visioning Process was also explained. Upcoming campus meetings related to visioning and the opportunity for SAC members to provide feedback in this process was addressed.

IV. New Business/Open Discussion with Questions & Answers

Discussion for remainder of meeting was handled with questions and answers and feedback shared between active board members and those who attended the open meeting.

Some of the questions, which arose, were:

Have there ever been open meetings for SAC before?

Will there be another or additional open meetings for SAC?

Could there be a special outreach effort made for those who work in the evenings?

Could more be done to spread the word of the initiatives and efforts of SAC or on campus in general?

What access does SAC have to other groups on campus?

What can be done to address special interest issues, i.e. decisions made about services to students, decisions made related to personnel?

Some of the specific answers to the questions above included:

SAC’s web page will list and explain items of interest that have come up at SAC meetings and resolutions that came about through College Governance. A comment box will also be made available on this web page so anyone with a concern or question can anonymously (or not) send in his or her questions for “new business” at our next meeting.

All constituents on campus have been given brochures with SAC members, so anyone with a question can call or email anyone on the SAC Council. All constituents were also invited to contact the SAC member who reached out to them as an additional means to make contact and express questions or concerns.

SAC is represented on every standing committee of College Council, as are students. Issues that are raised at SAC meetings that need to be brought to the attention of any committee of the College Council will be brought by the SAC representative to that committee.

The meeting concluded with the assurance that this initial effort to bring greater visibility to SAC as a whole and increase its effectiveness as a unit of the College governance will continue. People were also reminded that as elections approach, each member of the constituency has an opportunity to be heard.

Meeting adjourned, 3: 10 pm.

Submitted, M. Pace
