Athletics

It's no accident that the first Rhodes Scholar from Iona College was a championship rower and sports editor of our newspaper. Our athletes are students first.

Iona Sports are hard to miss. Our teams often appear in NCAA tournaments including men's basketball's March Madness. We're the only Division I college in Westchester County, boast 21 competitive teams.

Athletes on our teams have worked hard to get there. We recruit a highly competitive group of students from across the nation. Iona's small enough and our athletic teams are varied enough for first-hand participation. You can bet that if they're successful on the field, they're also successful in the classroom. We call them scholar athletes. They're an impressive bunch.

For example, our men's cross-country team is ranked 7th in the nation and they've captured 13 straight MAAC Championships. In fact, most of our teams have won MAAC championships. Plus, several baseball and basketball players have been drafted by the pros.

For students who play sports, but prefer a less competitive arena, Iona's intramural program is a great way to be involved. Students can also find creative ways to take a study break—swim laps in our Olympic-sized pool, blow off steam in the sauna, or work out in our fitness centers.
