Blackboard - Frequently Asked Questions

Q: How do I make changes to a Microsoft Word document on Blackboard?

This issue specifically affects those using Internet Explorer. By default, IE opens MS Office files (Word, Excel and PowerPoint) within the browser page. When this occurs, you are able to make changes to the document, however, your changes will not be saved to Blackboard.

The quick solution is to right-click the link to the document, then from the popup menu click “Save Target As…”, save the document to your computer, then open it from where you saved it.

Save As

Once you have the document saved and opened on your local computer, you can make your changes to the document then resave it to your computer.

After your changes are saved, go back to Blackboard and remove the old document and add the document with the changes from your computer to Blackboard:

  1. Click Modify next to the Item.
  2. Click Remove next to the attached document.
  3. Click Modify next to the item again.
  4. Scroll down to #2 Content and click Browse. Locate the file on your computer and click Open.
  5. Select any desired options and click Submit.

Your changes will now appear on Blackboard.
