At this point in the novel, Janie has a revelation that is quite surprising to the reader. Janie reveals that she actually hates her grandmother. This is shocking to the reader because it is Nanny who takes Janie as her own, raises her, and cares for nothing else in the world but Janie's future. What is interesting here, though, is that despite the fact that Janie says she hates Nanny, Janie fulfills every expectation Nanny has for her and achieves the highest goal Nanny dreams of for Janie - sitting on her porch, surrounded by things, having reached the level of someone who has things.
