Joe's funeral was "the finest thing Orange County had ever seen with Negro eyes" (84). Hurson describes the procession as containing such finery; such "goat and glamour" (84) that it impressed every single African American around. This was Joe's attempt during his entire existence in Eatonville. In fact, throughout Janie's life with Joe, it was obvious that Joe was doing all he could to bring about the finest line between blacks and whites that he could achieve. From the black perspective, as shown through all of the finery of Joe's funeral, he achieved it.
