"Those
two spots are among the darkest of our whole civilization"
The theme of civilization, culture, and
history as a boomerang runs rampant throughout the novel. The concept
of this HTML Project is to illuminate this circular history. The
text is comprised of situations that are modeled after the first chapter’s
smoker scene. In this scene, a seemingly innocent situation spirals
out of control and descends into chaos. Those who instigate the chaos
keep the Invisible Man running and serve to rob him of his identity.
This pattern continues until he literally falls out of the chaos of the
Harlem riots into the darkness of the sewer. Only by removing himself
from the anarchy of his culture is he capable of stopping the boomerang’s
vicious cycle.
