Frost’s
use of the words death and blight is an example of irony. Blight means to cause to wither or decay,
which is ironic to use a word like that to describe morning. The descriptions in the poem show that it is
morning time, which is often associated with happiness and new beginnings. People do not think of the morning as a time
for sadness by death. These two words
open a door to the meaning of the poem.
They give the reader new questions to ask, such as: “Why is he concerned
with a flower, a spider and a moth?,” and “How can a morning be ‘right’ if the
images used end in death?”
