CHAT INSTRUCTIONS
What is Internet Relay Chat
(IRC) ?
Visit the mIRC Home Page
Download an Internet Relay Chat client software package, mIRC.
Now (after you've downloaded and installed mIRC 5.41 on your computer),
we're ready to chat:
-
first, connect to the Internet through your Internet Service Provider;
-
then, minimize any open application window, and start your mIRC application
[click on Start (lower left of screen), Programs, mIRC, mIRC32];
-
once mIRC opens, close the About mIRC Window by clicking on the x
in the upper right corner of that window;
-
the mIRC Setup Window will then open, with the IRC Server window selected;
use the default setting: Random US DALnet server for your server,
enter your personnal information, and for your nickname, use your first
name followed by 992 (ie. John992, if your first name is John, in case
your first name is already in use by someone in another chat room on this
server);
-
click on OK, then connect (using the lighting bolt icon in upper left hand
corner of screen);
-
click on Command menu at top, choose Join Channel, type in MNG992 for the
name of the channel to join, and click on OK;
-
you should now be in the MNG992 chat room; the right pane of your window
will list the people present in that chat room;
-
if you are the first one to join, you will notice the symbol @ in
front of your nickname; this means you are the moderator of the room; to
relinquish this privilege (allowing you to ban or kick people out of the
chat room) to Prof. Alstete once he joins, the moderator will have to highlight
his nickname, JWA992, right-click on it, select Control, and give him "op"
privileges.
