Student Athlete Advisory Committee (S.A.A.C.)

S.A.A.C. - AMERICA SUPPORTING AMERICANS - WINTER/SPRING 2006

Inspired by the efforts of the non-profit group America Supporting Americans (ASA), the Iona College Athletics Department joined in the effort to provide care packages to soldiers in Iraq.

Many members of the Iona Family have close personal ties to someone in the armed forces, making this project especially important. The effort was spearheaded by the Student Athlete Advisory Committee over a three month period during which money was raised and goods were collected.

Student-athletes gathered donations at basketball games, on-campus events, and in the dorms to put the project in motion. Other on-campus groups were solicited to help as well to put together the care packages, which were sent to Delta Company / 1-502 IN/2 Brigade Combat Team 101st Airborne.

The packages are now en route and will soon reach the members of Delta Company/1-502 to provide a boost in their trying times away from home.

The goal of ASA is to assist in keeping soldier morale high while they are faced with difficult circumstances on a daily basis overseas. These goals are accomplished through two programs, Adopt-A-Unit and Foster-A-Unit. For more information on ASA and how you can get more involved, log onto www.asa-usa.org.
