Blackboard - Frequently Asked Questions

Q: How do I archive a course?

The archive course feature creates a single .zip file containing all of your site's content. If you open the file on your computer, you won't find a format that you can reuse outside of Blackboard. The archive is designed to be reused in a new Blackboard site, in the event you need to retrieve it in the future.

Use of Archive Files

Blackboard archive files are .zip format, meaning all content is compressed into a single zipped file for storage and later restoration if necessary into the Blackboard system.

Blackboard archive files must remain untouched once you have saved them locally. If you unzip an archive file, it will be rendered unusable by Blackboard.

Therefore, the procedure for archiving or saving a course site’s complete content would be:
1. Instructor archives course to .zip format
2. Instructor saves .zip file locally
3. BB Administrator deletes course sites
4. Instructor provides archive .zip file to BB administrator to restore if needed in future

Here are the steps:

  1. Navigate to the Control Panel for the course you wish to archive.
  2. Locate the Course Options section of the Control Panel, and click the Archive Course link.
  3. In the Export / Archive Manager, click on the Archive Course link.
  4. Archive Course has two sections, Course ID and Submit. In the first section the Course ID for your course is listed. Click Submit. A receipt page will display with the message:

This action has been successfully queued. An email will be sent when the process is complete.

  5. Click OK and then OK again to get back to the Control Panel.
  6. When you have received your email notification, repeat steps 1 and 2 above. You will see the single .zip file in the Export / Archive Manager.
  7. Right Click on the .zip file and "save file as" to a safe place on your computer. You can then burn to a CD if you wish. Different Browsers may have a different "save as" message, such as "save link as"
  8. Click OK to return to the Control Panel.
