Procedures for Faculty for Utilizing Blackboard Learning System

ACCESS

• The Blackboard server is located at http://online.iona.edu or as a quick link on the Iona Web.
• Every user must have a valid Blackboard Username and Password
• Request your Username and Password at the CELTIC Office (ext. 2146).

COMPATIBILITY

It is important that faculty and students use a compatible and supported version of the Operating System and Browsers.  Attached please find a document listing Operating Systems and Browser Requirements for Blackboard 7.2 and instructions on how to configure your browser:
Blackboard Certified Operating System and Browser Configurations

ESTABLISHING AN ON LINE COURSE SITE

  • To request a new course site be set up:
    • Fill out the online course request form on the CELTIC web site.
    • Identify the course name, course number and section.
    • If teaching more than one section of a course, decide if one course site will be used for multiple sections, or if you need a separate course site for each section.
    • If you are teaching a course for consecutive semesters, request a “course copy.”

***It is important that course sites are NOT re-used from semester to semester. Frequent updates to the Blackboard software platform including new versions may render an “old” course site damaged.***

  • Batch Enroll is available by request on the form. A static file will be exported from PeopleSoft into your Blackboard course site at the beginning of the semester. Subsequent adding students to and removing students from the class are the responsibility of the Instructor.

TRAINING

Sign up for CELTIC Blackboard workshops listed on the CELTIC web at http://www.iona.edu/celtic/workshops_and_seminars.cfm (Remember to check back at the beginning of each semester to see newly scheduled workshops)

  • Call CELTIC at extension 2146 to schedule individual, one-on-one training. Frank Sedlak, School of Arts and Science, extension 2138, is also is available for assistance with Blackboard.

Archive and Delete
All Blackboard Instructors are encouraged to take a look at their outdated course sites, and consider archiving, and/or removing them from the system. Instructors can archive their courses from the Control Panel by selecting Course Utilities. Instructors wishing to delete courses from the server should contact a system administrator - Diana Breen.

Blackboard Usernames and Passwords:

Student Usernames in Blackboard are the same as as a Student's Network ID. However, Passwords in Blackboard have evolved over time. Privacy issues no longer allow Iona College to use the social security number as the unique student identifier. Newly generated accounts use the last four digits of the PeopleSoft EMPLID.

Forgotten Student Passwords:
The Ryan Help Desk located at the main desk of Ryan Library assists students who have forgotten their passwords. Students must show valid Iona ID.

Blackboard Passwords After June 24, 2004:
Newly registered Iona students, or current Iona students who are enrolled in Blackboard for the first time would use the first two letters of their first name, first two letters of their last name and the last four digits of the EMPLID.
