The following rules should be adhered to regarding passwords:
- Passwords should not be less than eight characters.
- Passwords should not be words in any language.
- Do not use more than two successively repeated characters or numbers.
- Do not use obvious combinations such as month and year or department and extension.
- Do not use names, telephone numbers, birthdays, children's or pet names or any other information easily obtainable about you.
- New passwords must be significantly different from the previous.
- Passwords cannot start or end with the initials of the person.
- Passwords cannot be the same as the userid.
- Good passwords utilize both numbers and letters and special characters such as $, #, and %.
Please remember that you are responsible for your own computer account and password. Be sure to memorize your password and avoid writing it down or allowing anyone else to use your account or see you type in your password. When leaving your computer, lock your screen with a screen saver with password protection or log out. Passwords should be changed every 60 days. Finally, if you suspect that someone has seen your password, change it immediately.
