How To Fix Broken Links

Fixing Broken Links

Updater responsibility for the Iona Website is established by directory and implies not only keeping pages current and correct but also keeping the directory clean and current. Old files need to be removed from the directory if they are not currently used. Seasonal or temporary files should be kept off the webserver and stored on a local hard drive. As part of the effort to keep the website current the web site is analyzed each Sunday evening using WebTrends.

The WebTrends Link Analyzer looks at all pages on the site and reports the broken links found on those pages.

The General Statistics of the Report can be found at http://www.iona.edu/report/link/ and the Broken Links (Internal) and Broken Links (External) found by clicking on the links under Table of Contents.

The Broken Links (Internal) report shows a list of nonexistent pages and the links to them.

Click on each parent link to go to the page that links to the nonexistent page.

Find the link on that that page by mousing over the links to find its address in the status bar of the page:

In the example the Search.htm page contains a link to the non- existent page colegal.htm in the /iishelp/common/ directory on the website.

The updater responsible for the search.htm file should either remove the link altogether, fix the link to point to the correct existing file or create the appropriate page and link to it.

The tools you need are a directory view of the files on the website, specifically the directory you are responsible for, a browser and a web editor and both are contained within Macromedia Dreamweaver. An FTP application such as CuteFTP or WS FTP will also give you access to manage your directory.

Please don't hesitate to contact the Web Support Team if you need assistance.
