“What should I read next?”
"According to last year’s e-borrowing report, the majority (64%) of Americans ages 16 and older said they get book recommendations from family members, friends, or co-workers. Another 28% get them from online bookstores or other websites, 23% hear about books from bookstore staff, and 19% get recommendations from librarians or library websites."

The article “What should I read next?” by Kathryn Zickuhr, found on the Pew Internet & American Life Project web site, offers some good places to go to for book recommendations.

Research workshop: Creating Your Bibliography 11/8 @ Noon
This workshop will provide an introduction to the bibliography or reference list of sources required for your research papers. Citations describing individual items will be discussed and major citation styles used in various disciplines will be introduced such as MLA, APA, Chicago, and Turabian. Resources to help you generate your citations and your bibliography will also be reviewed.
The workshop will take place in the Ryan Library Seminar Room.
Workshops are under 30 minutes.

Expanded Online Business Subject Coverage
Iona college Libraries' coverage of important business journals recently got a boost with an upgrade of our Business Source subscription to the Premier level. Published by EBSCO on the Ebscohost platform,Business Source Premier features the full text for more than 2,100 journals. Full text is provided back to 1965, and searchable cited references back to 1998. Full-text coverage extends to all disciplines, including marketing, management, IS, operations management, accounting, finance and economics. Additional full text, non-journal content includes market research reports, industry reports, country reports, company profiles and SWOT analyses.

Renovations will continue in Ryan Library
During the Christmas break and January Wintersession, renovations will continue in Ryan Library. The third floor will be completed during this time. The book collection with call numbers 001 through 799, 830 through 999, and all oversize Q and QQ books will not be available during this time period. All renovation work is expected to be finished by the beginning of the Spring Semester. Please see a librarian at the reference desk for assistance in alternative resources. We regret the inconvenience to our patrons, but look forward to a wonderful, completely renovated Ryan Library. We appreciate your understanding.

Renovations to Ryan Library continue this fall.
The 900 Room (2nd floor west wing) will close for renovation beginning Friday, October 15, 2010 at 4:00 pm. After this date, books with call number starting with 830-999 will be placed in storage and will not be accessible. Details on subject areas affected by the renovations are listed below.

Please start your research as soon as possible in order to locate and check-out books with call numbers 830-999 prior to October 15. All books can be renewed online.

Interlibrary Loan service will be available but please remember that books requested using ILL could take on average of 10 business days to arrive.

As always, please visit the Ryan Library Reference Desk if you need assistance locating resources for your research or if you have any questions.

Does the Library have my textbooks?
The Library does not purchase textbooks. Textbooks are updated much more frequently than the traditional library book, thus making them difficult to keep up-to-date. On the slim chance that we may have acquired the textbook for your class, it would be listed in the Online Catalog. To check, click the Books tab on the library homepage, type in the exact title of the textbook, and switch the search type to Title. Most textbooks have generic names, so be sure to compare editor and publisher. And most importantly, check the edition. New textbook editions are published every few years – content and page numbering will be different in previous editions!

Ask your professor if they have or can put the textbook on reserve in the library. Browse the library's Course Reserves to see if your professor has placed the textbook or other reading materials on reserve. A "reserved" item can usually only be read in the library.

Welcome to the "new" Ryan Library
New additions and changes include a new entrance, new atrium, new iMac workstations, six Group Study rooms, a seminar room, new Help Desk, new Reference Desk, a CELTIC classroom, a classroom lab, a Special Collections Room to be dedicated to our treasures, attractive decor and lighting, and comfortable seating.

The Faculty Authors Collection is now in the new section of the library past the Reference Desk; Starbucks is where it was in the old Reference Room (soon be the Periodicals Room); a spacious area for having snacks and meeting people was created where the old entrance and Help Desk were.

We are excited about the "new" library and see it as a way to give even better service to our students and faculty.

Stop by and get to know your new Ryan Library. We hope to see you here soon.

Library Celebrates Black History Month
Everyone knows the name of Jackie Robinson and the legacy he left, not only in baseball, but within the fabric of American Society. Last year, the Iona College Libraries celebrated the 60th Anniversary of Robinson breaking the color barrier in baseball. In honor of Black History Month 2008, we present the legacy of Willie O'Ree

On January 18, 2958, O'Ree became the first black man to play professional hockey in the National Hockey League. O'Ree Overcame both racism and the loss of sight in one eye as he followed in Jackie Robinson's footsteps.

We invite you to visit our First Floor and Second Floor display cases to learn more about O'Ree and his legacy on the NHL. At the start of the 2007/2008 season, there were 12 black players in the NHL bringing the total to 52.

New Mac Computers @ Arrigoni Library/Technology Center
50 brand new Mac Dual-Boot computers have been installed in the Arrigoni Library and Technology Center and are ready for the spring semester. These new computers are state of the art and can run either Windows or Mac operating systems. They are very similar to the computers in the Ryan Library Computer Labs except they have larger screens and ultra thin keyboards with the mouse attached to it. Also, we provide two available printers for student use.

Ryan Library will be closed from Friday December 21st through Wednesday, January 2nd and will reopen on Thursday, January 3rd. Arrigoni Library, however, will reopen a day earlier on Wednesday January 2nd.

Rock Center Christmas Anniversaries Celebrated
The Iona College Libraries celebrate the 75th anniversaries of the Rockefeller Tree Lighting Ceremony and the Radio City Music Hall Christmas Spectacular with its Christmas in New York presentation in the Lobby display case and the Second Floor display cases.

In addition to pictures and information detailing these wonders of Christmas in New York, the Lobby display case presents the DVD Christmas In New York which features a music and light show that includes orchestral, a capella, small group and solo instrumentals as well as video that captures the atmosphere and warmth of the holiday season.

The Vernon J. Geberth Collection
The Practical Aspects of Criminal and Forensic Investigations series was donated by Lieutenant Commander (ret.), NYPD Vernon J. Geberth, an alumnus of Iona College (1967). Lt. Commander Geberth, who authored several books in this collection, is considered to be one of the foremost authorities on homicide investigation. His book Practical Homicide Investigation: Tactics, Procedures, and Forensic Techniques is known as the definitive source for homicide investigation and is widely used by police departments and police academies throughout the United States. Other books in this series discuss counterterrorism, drug enforcement, and forensic investigation. All books in this collection are kept on reserve at Ryan Library.

Join us in celebrating HISPANIC HERITAGE MONTH in Ryan Library, Iona College

Visit the IMÁGENES DE LA HISPANIDAD EXHIBIT, consisting of a collection of unique items from the Hispanic world, including an original leave from the first edition of Don Quixote (1605), a 16th century Inca scepter, Medieval and 15th centuries coins, Christopher Columbus log, original paintings, fine books, and much more.

Exhibits in the lobby and second floor, presented by Professor Carlos Vega.

Encyclopedia Britannica vs. Wikipedia
Recent articles have pitted the standard Encyclopedia Britannica versus the free Wikipedia. Britannica's articles are written by scholars, while anyone can contribute to Wikipedia articles. The online version of Britannica requires a paid subscription (which the library provides) while Wikipedia is free online). Nature found the two sources nearly comparable in accuracy, but Britannica now strongly refutes Nature’s research.

Online Searches Grow 55 Percent Year-Over-Year

"Nielsen//NetRatings reported that the total number of searches in the U.S. conducted across approximately 60 search engines grew 55 percent year-over-year to nearly 5.1 billion searches in December 2005. There were 3.3 billion searches conducted via search engines in December 2004. Library visits on the up for the third year running--England
For the third consecutive year there has been a rise in the number of people visiting public libraries in England. Statistics released today from the Chartered Institute of Public Finance and Accountancy show that in 2004/05 visits to public libraries increased by over three million. There were over 17 million more visits to libraries in 2004/05 than there were in 2001/02. For more details, check

Naxos Music Library @ Iona
Naxos Music Library streams more than 85,000 classical, jazz, and world music tracks. Browse or use the advanced search engine to search the library by genre, composer, country, work title, period, year of composition, instrument, music category, or name of artist. Naxos also offers a "playlist" function which allows the creation of special playlists which can be made available and accessible to all or groups of users. Teaching staff logging in with Professor Usernames and Passwords can create and edit playlists.

Now includes weekly podcasts!

New Journal Added to PsycARTICLES
The Journal of Individual Differences has been added to PsycARTICLES. Read the latest issue now.

This title, published by Hogrefe and Huber, publishes articles dealing with individual differences (e.g. gender, temperament, personality, intelligence) in behavior, emotion, cognition and their developmental aspects. Researchers on both humans and animals use this information in their assessments. The APA will be adding another title, Methodology, to PsycARTICLES soon.
