Glossary of Library Terms
Find definitions to commonly used library terminology.

 

A

ABSTRACTS are summaries of information contained in a longer work. An abstract for a 15 page journal article may be 150 words long.

ACADEMIC JOURNALS see Scholarly Journals.

C

CD-ROM stands for Compact Disc Read-only Memory. CD-ROMs can hold large amounts of data and often accompany books on technology-related subjects.

CALL NUMBERS are markings put on books and other media so that they can be shelved and found in the Library near books and other media that have similar information.

CIRCULATION refers to the movement of a book out of and back into the Library when it is borrowed and returned. The Circulation desk is in front of the Library entrance.

COLLECTED BIOGRAPHIES give information about many different people. The people may be generally well known or they may be known for achievement within a particular population or within a particular field.

CURRENT JOURNALS are the most recent issues of a particular serials title that have come into the library. They have no call number and are found in the Reference Room at the Ryan Library and at the Helen T. Arrigoni Library/Technology Center, arranged alphabetically by their titles.

D

DICTIONARIES give word spellings, parts of speech, etymology (history) and definitions.

DIRECTORIES list individuals and agencies with contact information. Many directories are available in the Libraries' Reference collection.

E

ENCYCLOPEDIAS cover many topics of general interest or topics in a specialized field. They are a great place to begin your research or find a topic for your paper!

The ERIC Database is an index and abstract database for education articles published in journals and reproduced in ERIC documents.

ERIC DOCUMENTS are education documents collected by ERIC, the Educational Resources Information Center. ERIC documents can be found at the Helen T. Arrigoni Library/Technology Center or online.

F

FIELDS are ways of dividing and storing information about items in a database. The information stored for all items for a particular field is arranged alphabetically or numerically in a index for that field. Books in a book database, for example, will have have their titles isolated in a title field and a title field index will alphabetically arrange the titles of all the books included in the database.

FINES must be paid for books that are borrowed and not brought back to the Library by the date stamped on the inside back cover. Pay fines for Ryan Library materials at the first floor Circulation desk, and at the Helen Arrigoni Library/Technology Center Circulation Desk.

A HOLD request on a book will assure that you will be the next person allowed to borrow the book. Hold requests are made at the Circulation desk on the first floor of the Library.

INDEXES give location references to articles found in one or more journals.

KEYWORD is a type of search that will include all fields in a database.

M

MAGAZINES are serials that are published less frequently than newspapers and cover topics of general interest. They may be geared to one part of the general population.

MEDIA are different sources for carrying information.

MEDLINE is a database that indexes specialized scholarly journals in medicine and biological sciences.

MICROFICHE is an a sheet of film the size of an index card. The pages of a book or journal have been photographed and reduced in size to fit on the microfiche.

MICROFILM is a roll of film the size of a bagel. The pages of a book or journal have been photographed and reduced in size to fit on the microfilm.

N

NEWSPAPERS are serials that are published daily. Because they can take up a lot of space very quickly, the Libraries keep older ones in a reduced form on microfilm.

NON-CIRCULATING MATERIAL cannot be borrowed from the library. Reference books, recordings, videos, periodicals are all examples of non-circulating material.

The ONLINE CATALOG refers to the database or collection of records for books and other media that are stored in ORION.

ONLINE DATABASES are databases that come electronically through a web page from a source outside the building.

P

PEER REVIEWED JOURNALS are Scholarly Journals where each article is reviewed by a board of experts in the field of the journal before acceptance for publication. Peer review insures that the research described in a journal's articles is sound and of high quality.

A PERIODICALS INDEX groups citations to articles from a large number of magazines or journals by subject.

R

READER'S GUIDE TO PERIODICAL LITERATURE is a printed index to magazines and journals covering topics of general interest.

A RECORD for a book or other medium is the information in a computer database that tells you about the book or other medium (its title, who wrote it, who published it, etc.).

REFEREED JOURNALS see Peer Reviewed Journals

REFERENCE BOOKS are used in the library and may not be borrowed.

SCHOLARLY JOURNALS include information by people in a special subject field. They are not meant to give general, background information on broad topics, but focus instead on a specialized topic in the field. Also see Peer Reviewed Journals.

V

VENDA CARDS allow you to pay to use photocopying machines with a plastic card encoded with a monetary value. You encode the card with a value when you put money into a venda card machine.
